September 06, 2011:
Grove Beach Point Association survived Hurricane Irene but many sustained tremendous loss. The storm hit at the peak high tide of the month and hit with such fury it knocked stone walls down and the water went through houses causing severe damage. Power lines came down and debris was strewn everywhere.
As an Association, we should all strive to help each other in need and do what is right for our Association. These are the times to come together and make things better at GBPA.
If you weren't able to witness first hand the wrath of Hurricane Irene, photos can be found at: On SHUTTERFLY at http://grovebeachpointstormirene.shutterfly.com/ ( you may have to join Shutterfly OR you can log in with this user name: "grovebeachpoint@comcast.net" and the password of "westbrook")
or on our Facebook Page , there are many pictures and videos from the storm. It will make you truly appreciate the nature of this Hurricane. On Youtube, videos can be found by searching for “grove beach point irene”.
If you have photos/videos to share, please email to the webmaster at grovebeachpoint@comcast.net and those will be added as well.
Best of luck to all in their cleanup efforts.

To whoever kindly removed the flag prior to the storm, Please hang it up again or contact the webmaster with any information.

PLEASE remember that the Speed limit is 20 miles per hour on our Association roads. Be cautious of people, kids, cars, balls rolling into the street. Remember that cars must be parked 25 feet from Stop Signs. We are have been very fortunate not to have any accidents or injuries on our property! Please remind your neighbors and guests to be sensitive to the speed limit.
If you are interested in purchasing a sign that says "DRIVE LIKE YOUR KIDS LIVE HERE", please go to http://www.drivelikeyourkidslivehere.com/ . The signs are only $9.99. With tax & s/h; you can get a sign for under $15.00
G4S Security has been hired for Grove Beach Point Association this summer beginning July 1st. The Security Guards’ primary duty will be to ensure everyone using our beach is either a member or guest and will be enforcing our Beach Rules. On Friday and Saturday evenings ( 9 pm to midnight) the guard will be patrolling our Association roads on a bicycle. A List of GBPA Members and Tenants has been provided to G4S Security. Our Security Guard will be referencing this list as people approach the patio. The Security Guard will be asking your name and if you are a member or guest. Others will be asked to leave. If someone approaches the beach and their name is NOT on the Member list, they will be asked if they are a guest or tenant/renter and be asked to sign in. We will be working out the kinks in this process over the upcoming weeks, so please be patient. Hopefully once our guard gets familiar with repeating faces and names he/she won’t be asking for your name. Please send updates to the Member list via email to: GroveBeachPoint@comcast.net or via post to GBPA at P. O. Box 754 , Westbrook, CT 06498-0754. Additionally if you have questions or comments, send them to GroveBeachPoint@comcast.net. Thank you for your co-operation!

Latest news from GBPA: The BOG would like to thank everyone for attending the Annual Meeting. We had a very passionate crowd discussing various issues including the treasurer's report and budget, an update on the Woods Hole Study, Parking lot improvements, Patio Beautification, safety and security.
Throughout the month of June, improvements to the parking lot will wrap up. Look for a new shed to arrive! The BOG would like to express a special Thanks to Darylle Connelly for her dedication and efforts, not only on the parking lot project, but for all her hard work as a BOG member these past few years! The grading of the beach will start on Monday June 13th. The contractor will be working over the course of 3-4 days cleaning up all debris and logs on our beach. There will be grading of the beach from West to East. Please do not ask the contractor to do any special work unless you are prepared to pay for it. The contractor is instructed by the BOG to only complete certain items. A Port-o-potty will be placed behind the shed and the raft and ropes will be laid out for the upcoming season.
The BOG has hired a private security company to monitor folks using our beach, ensuring that everyone is either a member or guest of a member. Details are still in the works; look for a special announcement regarding Security in the upcoming weeks.
SUMMER PLANS! Special Thanks to Bill & Maureen Morris for volunteering to run the 4th of July Breakfast! As always, volunteers are always welcome! On that note – for all those who enjoy the annual games on the beach following the breakfast, we are hoping for someone to step up to the plate and volunteer to run the games. It’s a great time for the kids and makes for a fun day, PLEASE consider volunteering for this event! Send a note to the webmaster (grovebeachpoint@comcast.net) to pitch in or for more information!
  • 4th of July Breakfast, Saturday, July 2 - more details to come!
  • Movies on the beach start Saturday, July 9 and will begin at dusk.
  • Barbara Scala will be running the Potluck Supper this summer.
The Town of Westbrook is working on a Plan of Conservation and Development. Please click here for the latest flyer announcing the upcoming Public Information meetings. The next meeting is scheduled for June 27, 2011. Additional information can be found on the Town of Westbrook Website.
Finally - an update regarding the Woods Hole study from Ken Penfield: Our study with Woods Hole will be complete soon. The following is a brief summary from Woods Hole of where we are at with the study:
  • 1. The historical shoreline change work is completed. This has provided both the historical perspective of what has occurred at GBPA, as well as for the entire littoral cell, and given us information for gaging the relative accuracy of the wave and sediment transport modeling.
  • 2. The wave climatology and wave transformation modeling is also complete. The wave modeling provides areas of wave energy distribution (areas of increased and decreased wave energy) under various scenarios and is also used to drive the sediment transport model.
  • 3. The sediment transport modeling is also complete.
  • 4. We are currently working on the development and analysis of the various potential alternatives to be assessed for the GBPA beaches. We are currently simulating cases and removing certain solutions that do not reach a reasonable performance level. Once we have the alternatives through this initial screening process and have narrowed them down a bit, we will be providing a short-list of alternatives for GBPA to consider. The alternatives being considered currently include:
    • Beach replenishment ~ Dune reconstruction ~ Manual backpassing and sand relocation ~ Selective Revetments and seawalls ~ Modifying, removing, relocating, or adding groins ~ Nearshore bar placement
Of course there are some subsets and combinations of these as well. Also, on other projects we are working on for the Corps, Grove Beach Point has been identified as a potential beneficial re-use site for compatible dredged sediment. It is part of the Long Island Sound dredge management program….So we are keeping an eye on that as well.

The BOG is working on an electronic newsletter, so keep your eyes posted in the coming weeks for a copy in your email inbox. As a reminder, the BOG opted last year to mail hard copies of just two newsletters a year, one in April and the other in October. We are moving towards a more “GREEN” GBPA and using electronic forms of communication as well as using this website as a bulletin board for news and events. If you know someone who isn’t on our email distribution list, please have them Please email the WEBMASTER with your email address ( along with your First and Last Name) to sign up for the Newsletter Emails!

Committees:
Beach Preservation Project: News from Woods Hole…Current activity is that we are in Task # 3 – The Sediment Study. Naturally with this whacky New England weather, they are a little behind schedule. Hopefully once the weather warms up they will pick up the pace!

BlockWatch / Neighborhood Crime Watch

Reminder – as things happen call Troop F /Westbrook police ASAP. An effective Block watch would have a Single Point of Contact for your Block Watch section. A Block Watch committee is responsible to behave the way you want. Keep it simple and manageable. If people move, replace them on the committee.
    Things to look out for:
  • Suspicious vehicles
  • Vandalism
  • Going through stop sign
  • Wrong way on a 1 way street
If you see a violation, you can report it & file a formal complaint – you would go to court if you are a witness
How to make your home safer?
  • Put house number in a visible well lit location
  • Keep a light on the porch
  • Keep hedges trimmed
  • Lock all doors
  • Security stickers/camera – ( it doesn’t have to be in working order)
  • Know your neighbor!
Bottom line: USE COMMON SENSE!!!
BE AWARE!!!

Woods Hole Study Information

The Board of Governors (BOG) has been working with Woods Hole Group since May 2009 in evaluating existing conditions at GBPA. The Woods Hole Group provided the BOG with results of a site visit (in 2009) and details on potential future phases intended to evaluate coastal engineering solutions to assist our association in preserving the beach.
The goals of GBPA are as follows:

1. To protect the coastal infrastructure (homes, cottages, recreational assets) along the association beach
2. Maintain or improve the beach for recreational use
3. Reduce overall maintenance of the beach and existing roadway
4. Maximize the performance (service life) of any potential solution
5. Determine the most cost effective solution over a minimum of a 50-year time frame
6. Determine the relative effectiveness of the existing coastal structures along the association beach

The GBPA BOG seeks to extend an invitation to other Beaches in the surrounding areas in the hopes that other beach associations can benefit from the Woods Hole Study allowing our coastline continuous beach nourishment.
Please click on the links to view a copy of the Woods Hole Primary Report, and the Phase II report.
